Brian Charette • You Don't Know Jack

Review from DownBeat (by Michael J. West):
With the Hammond organ riding a wave of visibility it hasn't seen since late-'60s soul jazz, what better stratagem than a tribute to one of the avatars of that sound? Brian Charette first established himself in New York playing at a Harlem club on an organ that once belonged to "Brother" (or "Captain") Jack McDuff, whose vinegary sound and soulful licks Charette successfully channels and extends on You Don't Know Jack! It's not an album of McDuff's music, per se; only two of his tunes, the blues "Jolly Black Giant" and the bossa nova "6:30 In The Morning," stand against originals by Charette (and one by tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds, who also produced the album in Vancouver). But it groks the sound and style that made McDuff tick, compositionally -- place Charette's opening "Early America" next to McDuff's 1969 "Theme From An Electric Surfboard" and see if they're not congruent -- and improvisationally. "Microcosmic Orbit" might sound like a title from a Sun Ra record, but it's a vehicle for the kind of punctilious, singsong phrasings that McDuff loved. (Not to mention his weirdly scratchy organ timbre; I don't know how the hell McDuff made that sound, but Charette does.) All that is not to say that there's no originality on You Don't Know Jack! The title track, oddly enough, features Charette playing a hiccup-y blues line that Jack would probably never touch. And while Weeds and guitarist Dave Sikula easily evoke the greasy, gritsy feel of down-home soul jazz, neither conjures the sound of any instrumentalist in particular. (As for drummer John Lee, he simply and tastefully swings: What else is there?) What's more, Weeds' "Have You Met Joan?" is a Bird-style bebop head that, for its six-minute length, recontextualizes the whole affair.

You Don't Know Jack! You Don't Know Jack!

Brian Charette • Groovin' with Big G

Groovin' With Big G was destined to come about. When a young Brian Charette was cutting his teeth on jazz piano gigs in his home state of Connecticut in the early '90s, he wound up working dates with drummer George Coleman Jr. The two struck up a friendship, and Coleman's encouragement helped Charette make the leap to New York a few years later. Coleman even let the budding pianist crash in his rehearsal studio for a spell.

Some time later, after transitioning into the world of jazz organ and going all in with the purchase of a Hammond B3, Charette's instrument took residence in that very same studio. There, this pair was free to practice and jam to its heart's content. On one particularly memorable occasion in said spot, the drummer's famed father—George Coleman, Sr., the Memphis Mafia tenor titan known for his unflagging attitude and virtuosity—dropped in to play with them. Whether they knew it or not at the time, the seeds for this album were planted at that very point.

Fast-forward more than two decades and we come to the moment when those aforementioned seeds began to sprout. The younger Coleman called Charette to see if he could join the elder in a gig in the saxophonist's hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. That fruitful collaboration, ultimately, led to this one.

A wonderfully limber outing wedding the Colemans with Charette and ace guitarist Vic Juris, Groovin' With Big G maintains the jam session vibe that these men are so accustomed to. The tunes, save for a soulful "Father And Son" credited to Charette and shaped by this foursome, are all jazz warhorses. But this crew doesn't view these standards with a sense of "been there, done that" apathy. Instead, these musicians make a few tweaks here and there, saddle up, and enjoy seeing where the ride takes them. A comfortably swinging "Stella By Starlight" sets things in motion and leads to a light-as-air "Body And Soul," a performance modified with a waltzing gait ; a streamlined trip through Tadd Dameron's "On A Misty Night" ends with an arrival at Lou Donaldson's "Alligator Boogaloo," where some zany Charette-isms lighten up the outro; and the closing triptych—a low-temperature "Autumn Leaves" enlivened by a vamping send-off, an appropriately tender "Never Let Me Go," and a quick jaunt through "Tenor Madness"—offers all parties some room to shine in various lights. As if we need a reminder about the saxophone-wielding Coleman's stature, Charette also includes a take on Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" as the centerpiece. It nods to Coleman's work on the original while inhabiting its own dreamy space.

There's such a natural fit from musician to musician and band to song here, and that shouldn't come as a real surprise. These men are in their element when digging into chestnuts like these, and this quartet is top-shelf all the way. The chance to hear Brian Charette grooving with George Coleman, Sr. and company is simply priceless.

Groovin' With Big G estaba destinado a producirse.

Will Bernard • Just Like Downtown

Review
Will Bernard is far from a newbie but his debut release from Posi-Tone cuts a fresh new musical path for this virtuoso guitarist that gets no where near the ink he deserves. Nine tracks with seven stellar originals and two incredibly eclectic if not surprising covers add for one of the most solid six string outings for the year. To start, no one covers Led Zeppelin in a guitar 4tet format and if they do then "Dancing Days" is probably not their first pick from their legendary discography. Some artists you don't cover and not because their music is the holy grail or part of what I refer to as the cultural keys to the kingdom but because their music simply does not make the transition to the improvised format found here. "Dancing Days" is turned into an odd metered deceptively funky ditty that stays with you. Bernard is joined by organ phenom Brian Charette who provides the perfect harmonic counterpoint and the tune simmers effortless along. Will Bernard takes the somewhat minimalist approach is his clean angular playing with no notes wasted but a direct lyrical sense of purpose. "Safety In Numbers" is a delightfully syncopated and engaging off metered original featuring veteran reed titan John Ellis, another under appreciated talent if there ever was. Drummer Rudy Royston is one of the best half dozen drummers on the planet and using the tired phrase "in the pocket" would be the classic undersell here. "Bali Hai" from the movie South Pacific is a melodic exploratory with texture and an deceptively haunting modern folk infusion of impressionistic wonder. The bass clarinet work from Ellis serves as somewhat of a virtual second melody line running below the surface at points during this expansive reharm. The tunes is completely reinvented with one of the most skillful arrangements of a cinematic masterpiece that can be found. This is music with meat on its bones. Not the same tired 4tet format where Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall or perhaps Pat Metheny riffs are banged out by a master technician. Instead we find Will Bernard giving a master class on just what modern jazz guitar is about when approached by an artist whose depth is seemingly only matched by his fearlessness as a lyrical free spirit. Will Bernard compositions will stand the test of time as well as any modern jazz guitarist working today. An absolute must. --Brent Black, @ Critical Jazz

Coming over to the Posi-Tone label for his latest creation was bound to mean that the restless funk-jazz guitarist Will Bernard was going to make a different kind of record...again. Bernard s B3 organ fixation continues but not a whole lot else carries over from last year s funky Outdoor Living. Instead of Wil Blades on Hammond, we get Brian Charette. Simon Lott is swapped out for Rudy Royston. And Bernard gains a front line foil by adding saxophonist John Ellis. But in spite of this talent-loaded roster, the big deal about the impending Just Like Downtown is that Bernard doesn t so much want to groove like before. He wants to swing. Even the CD cover of a nattily-attired Bernard topped off with a pork pie hat shouts swing. Unlike a lot of his records, the Grammy-nominated fret master isn t really trying something new; Just Like Downtown is a back-to-my-jazz-roots affair. Given that, he s dead serious in approaching it with not only reverence but also with his own personality. Which means it grooves, anyway, like Dime Store Thriller, that finds Bernard and Ellis playing smoky lines in unison while Charette easily slips between comping and leading. Bernard s single note lines are all about the riding the groove, but he also likes to rub a little bit of dirt on it. Bernard wrote Dime and all but two of the other eight tunes in this batch of recordings, and though much of it is blues-based, the songwriting avoids the predictable twelve-bar fare. Sweet Spot swings hard, with Royston s drums just about jumping out of the speakers. Ellis sax delivery is red hot and smooth at the same time. Safety In Numbers is a hot tune, too, that Bernard stuffed with dense bop articulations. On this song, as well as on the sizzler Route 46, Bernard s linear attack visits Pat Martino territory. Ellis pulls out the bass clarinet for a few numbers, an instrument rarely used in organ jazz but he makes it sound like a natural fit. Little Hand is a hushed number where that lower octave clarinet s tone works great in this setting, especially in the way Ellis applies the right sentiment to it. It s also featured in Bali Hai from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific, and the burly tone is nearly that of a baritone sax. Meanwhile, Bernard can be heard playing his trademark swampy, slide-like note bending. The other cover might appear to be a left-field choice, too: Dancing Days, from Led Zeppelin s Houses Of The Holy tune. The Bonham beat is retained as well as the melody, but something about Charette s B3 and Bernard s soft-toned guitar than nonetheless manages to transform the song into a greasy blues-jazz number. Bernard has played a Zeppelin cover or two in Stanton Moore s band, so he already knew his way around the band s repertoire in the jazz sense pretty darned well. Bernard s jazz sense gets in a good workout all over Just Like Downtown. With a supporting cast of Ellis, Charette and Royston, he found yet another way to stoke fans of guitar/B3 jazz. --S. Victor Aaron - Something Else!

Guitarist Will Bernard has been connected to a number of singular groups and individuals, from the Monk-to-funk outfit known as T.J. Kirk to New Orleans drumming giant Stanton Moore to multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum's boundary-pushing Hieroglyphics Ensemble, but a common denominator exists in his strongest work with each one: Bernard's best is always rooted in the groove. He has an no-fuss way of establishing and/or inhabiting the rhythmic currents of a song and he puts that skill to good use, once again, on Just Like Downtown. This quartet date finds Bernard fronting a highly capable and flexible foursome. Together, they tackle original soul jazz ("Dime Store Thriller"), Led Zeppelin ("Dancing Days") and Richard Rodgers ("Bali Hai"). Some pieces are brisk and driving ("Sweet Spot") and others like to linger for a while ("Little Hand"), as Bernard and company simply let the music float on by. Most of these musical offerings get to the point right away, but a sense of mystery is occasionally in the air as things coalesce ("Bali Hai") or blow slowly in the Frisell-ian breeze ("P.M. Gone"). Bernard's buddies deserve a good deal of credit for bringing his music to life. They sound good when working from the same playbook as the leader ("Dime Store Thriller"), but they sound great when one person's contributions are thrown into sharp relief; John Ellis' swaggering bass clarinet riff, for example, enlivens the jaunty "Go West," and drummer Rudy Royston delivers a tornado of a performance on the choppy "Safety In Numbers," which also features a beast-of-a-solo from Bernard. Organist Brian Charette the fourth piece of the puzzle is the one most responsible for adding color to the project. He brings all manner of sound both earthy and alien into the picture. Just Like Downtown possesses an immediately likeable, unforced quality. The music simply flows when Will Bernard and company get going. --Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Just Like Downtown posee una cualidad inmediatamente simpática y no forzada. -Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Brian Charette • Borderless

Review from A Green Man Review:
For a little over 30 years Brian Charette has been playing and recording on the organ — backing a variety of pop and jazz singers and leading his own groups. According to noted jazz writer Scott Yanow in the liner notes to Borderless, he's the first and so far only to make a full jazz album of solo organ music, and this is now his third such album, all of them on Steeplechase. Going by the evidence of this album and Yanow's thorough notes, Charette is quite an eclectic player. You'll find plenty of examples of the kind of jazz that other players of the Hammond B3 make, including a playful cover of Booker T's "Hip Hug-Her" and a cool take on Tadd Dameron's "Tadd's Delight," and especially Charette's own swinging opening track "Minors Must Be Accompanied By Adults." He lends his appropriately cool and dry vocals to the Antonio Carlos Jobim classic "Corcovado."

Resena de A Green Man Review:
Must Be Accompanied By Adults."

Brian Charette • Jackpot

Review from All About Jazz (by Pierre Giroux):
In the tradition of some great Hammond organ players of the past, such as Jack McDuff, Melvin Rhyne, Don Patterson, Larry Young and Jimmy Smith, one leading practitioner on this instrument, Brian Charette, wanted to write some swinging and soulful bebop tunes which would honor the memory of these past greats. The musicians Charette chose to travel on this journey were steeped in this genre, tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds, funky guitarist Ed Cherry and the swinging drummer Bill Stewart. To ensure that the charts were treated with the appropriate degree of seriousness, the band came together on November 4, 2021 at the Rudy Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ with Maureen Sikler in charge of the engineering. The title track is Jackpot and the music is full measure as the title implies. Throughout the session the group manages to squeeze every drop of funky bop from all the charts.

Brian Charette • Music For Organ Sextette

Review
by Ken Dryden
Organ-led record dates often fall into predictability, but that's not the case with this collection of originals featuring the Brian Charette Sextette. Rather than tackle old warhorses or put a heavy emphasis on soul and funk, Charette brought in new material and chose four reed players with whom he had worked over the years (Jay Collins, Mike DiRubbo, Joel Frahm, and John Ellis), in addition to drummer Jochen Rueckert. "Computer God" is a driving post-bop work that alternates between its engaging riff and focus on each of the individual reed soloists, with the leader taking the final solo. "Fugue for Kathleen Anne" is an intricate feature for the four reed players, leading into the more complex "Ex Girlfriend Variations," the latter a mix of beauty, dissonance, and tension. "Risk" represents Charette's playful side; its sudden shifts between several moods and styles never lose the listener, with the blues at its core. "The Elvira Pacifier" is a comical reggae work, punctuated by Collins' breezy flute, DiRubbo's spirited alto sax, Ellis' whimsical bass clarinet, and Frahm's sassy tenor. His loping "Prayer for an Agnostic" kicks off with Charette's gospel-like organ, with the choir-like reeds providing a brief interlude to lead into their individual features. "Tambourine," the funkiest song of the session, wraps the date with energy that leaves the listener wanting more.

Doug Webb • Triple Play

As tempting as it is to simply consign a blowing session label to Triple Play, a three tenor saxophone plus rhythm date led by Doug Webb, there's ample evidence that something more disciplined and structured is afoot. For one thing, eight of the disc's eleven tracks are under six minutes—in other words, there's not a lot of room for indulgence, excess, or one-upmanship of any kind. The material, including striking originals by the leader, Walt Weiskopf, and Joel Frahm, as well as assorted standards such as "Avalon," "Giant Steps," and "I Concentrate On You," is often tendered by the horns like a reed section of a big band, carefully blended and precisely executed. Randy Aldcroft, who doesn't appear on the record, is credited with the arrangements of three selections.

Organist Brian Charette serves as the session's ballast, holding things in place with smart, pulsating work on the bass pedals, beautifully shaded and nuanced comping, as well as tweaking soloists with the occasional brash chord. Rudy Royston's drums and cymbals constitute the session's wild card. He offers a busy, sometimes manic commentary, moving in and out of the pocket at will, punching holes in the music with his bass and snare drums, playing stretches of comparatively straight time, as well as tapping out jumbles of strokes.

Webb, Weiskopf, and Frahm are middle-aged veterans of the struggles and triumphs of jazz performance, far too accomplished and certain of their abilities to participate in some sort of spurious tenor battle; thankfully, the record's end result is a wealth of inspired, highly focused improvisations. The three tenors—each in his own manner—play with a ruthless efficiency, making complete, rousing statements, usually in just a handful of choruses, on selections mostly taken at middling to up tempos.

Webb possesses an exemplary ability to navigate various tempos and find fresh perspectives on material that would induce a litany of clichés in a lesser player. Undaunted by the dizzying pace of "Avalon," his ideas cohere without a trace of athleticism or strain. A three-chorus turn on Lou Donaldson's soul-jazz tune "Alligator Boogaloo" includes relaxed, neatly sculpted phrases as well as the requisite blues and R & B effusions. Throughout "I Concentrate On You," amidst Charette's and Royston's firm support, he swings in a way that evinces a momentum of its own. During the first chorus of his composition "Jones," Webb makes an art of stopping short, that is cutting off ideas before an easily anticipated conclusion, and then offering something else, without any hint of disengagement or loss of continuity.

It's easy to become preoccupied with Weiskopf's tone, a dense, vibrating, all-encompassing, blues-fused concoction, at the expense of taking notice of the ways in which he organizes ideas in the service of sustaining momentum. On his composition "Three's A Crowd" and Webb's "Triple Play," he displays a flair for brief, dramatic entrances—such as slamming home one note and extending it, or making a handful of notes sound like a buzz saw, immediately following with an impassioned, metallic cry—and then rapidly getting down to the business of building a cogent, emotionally compelling improvisation. The second chorus on "The Way Things Are," another one of his compositions, includes some of Weiskopf's most stunning work on the record. His lines are taut, tightly connected, and for the most part etched into the hum and rumble of Charette's bass line. When he pauses, or briefly spins out a flurry of notes that fly against the beat before snapping back to attention, the effect is like an edifice being ripped apart and immediately—miraculously—put back into place.

Each of Frahm's solos is something of an adventure, as he manipulates his tone, juggles contrasting rhythms, intentionally rushes or drags time, changes temperament from cool to hot, and flashes a number of ideas in relatively short periods. His "Jones" improvisation gradually comes into focus. Frahm lays back for much of the first chorus, playing a little behind the beat and leaving some room between selected phrases. The last eight bars signal a change as his tone assumes a ragged edge. The second chorus begins with the insistent pecking of a number of staccato notes, which he rapidly wrestles into a nifty phrase. Eventually his sound thickens and he integrates squeaks, burr tones, and screams. During "Your Place Or Mine" Frahm evokes jazz of the swing era for about a half chorus in terms of vocabulary and rhythmic nuisances before metamorphosing to the present day. Throughout "Triple Play" he creates tension by playing slightly ahead of the beat, and sprinkles at least three song quotes into the solo's second chorus.

Not unlike Swing Shift, Webb's memorable 2012 release on Posi-Tone, Triple Play contains the present centered vibe of the last set of a club date, when the musicians are open to all possibilities, expressing themselves without inhibitions and, for an hour or so, the sounds are strong enough to keep the outside world at bay.

Brian Charette • Good Tipper

Nine of the eleven tracks on organist Brian Charette's Square One (Posi-Tone, 2014) were originals, but that doesn't mean he's uninterested in tackling the music of others. In fact, judging by this album, it would seem that he really digs digging into covers. Everybody from film score icon John Barry to tunesmith Jimmy Webb to saxophonist Joe Henderson gets a nod during the fun-filled Good Tipper

Charette has built a reputation as one of the most adventuresome yet respectful organists operating today, something that's evident on this album when you hear him cook on a twenty-bar blues ("Good Tipper"), toy with his sound on a grooving original from guitarist Avi Rothbard ("Another Quarter"), recast a Richard Rodgers classic in five ("Spring Is Here") or deliver surprisingly straightforward takes on a James Bond theme ("You Only Live Twice") and a classic from The Zombies ("Time Of The Season"). He's not looking to simply walk in the footsteps of other organists, but he's also not out to alter the organ's position in the jazz firmament. He enjoys pushing, pulling and expanding the instrument's reach a bit while staying true to the music.

In addition to the aforementioned covers, Charette and company deliver an enthusiastic "Cuando Cuando Cuando," an album-ending take on Henderson's "The Kicker," and two different Jimmy Webb classics—"Wichita Lineman," which is covered so often it could almost be considered a standard at this point, and "Up, Up And Away," a number that wreaks of musical kitsch in its decades-old form(s), but sounds just fine when Charette gets done with it. The rest of the program is filled out by pleasing original numbers like "One And Nine," a lively Rothbard tune that brings saxophonist Joe Sucato aboard, and "To Live In Your Life," a relatively mellow Charette number.

Two different trios take flight here, as Charette works with Rothbard and drummer Jordan Young on eight tracks and turns to guitarist Yotam Silberstein and drummer Mark Ferber on the remaining four, but they travel on similar flight paths. The latter rhythm section works its magic on most of the pop-leaning pieces while the former duo helps Charette cover all angles. The music is all solid and appealing, regardless of which trio is at play. Good Tipper=good music.

The Zombies ("Time Of The Season").

Jordan Young • Cymbal Melodies

Bells are ringing when drummer Jordan Young hits the set with his debut release for Posi-Tone, aptly entitled "Cymbal Melodies." Indeed, Young succeeds in pushing his melodic message to the forefront with skillful leadership, while he ably demonstrates a total command of his own instrument. The session sings and soars from start to finish, featuring the B-3 wizardry and rhythmic genius of Brian Charette, the sensationally sizzling lines of guitarist Avi Rothbard, and Joe Sucato on sax for four tunes. Critical listeners will certainly enjoy this flowing and thoughtful program of swinging selections and should agree that "Cymbal Melodies" announces that Jordan Young is an important and emerging new voice in jazz.
https://www.posi-tone.com/cymbalmelodies/cymbalmelodies.html

Drummer Jordan Young took the organ quartet outside of its stylistic comfort zone on his debut, Jordan Young Group (Self Produced, 2010), and continues to carve his own path within this format on this enjoyable follow-up. Young reconvenes the quartet from his first leader date, with Avi Rothbard taking the place of guitarist Yotam Silberstein, and puts together an appealing, covers-heavy program that speaks to his musical likes and varied interests.

The standard, greasy blues numbers that are de rigueur for organ groups don't seem to appeal to Young, so he calls on his own musical muses to give him sustenance. He mades it clear that he is a '60s Blue Note fan, as he turned to the works of saxophonists Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter on his first leader date, and furthers that disposition here by taking a stab at guitarist Grant Green ("Grantstand") and trumpeter Lee Morgan ("Free Wheelin'"). Jazz musician standbys like "Easy Living," taken at a fast clip, and "Ghost Of A Chance," which belongs to Rothbard's melodious guitar, fill a few more spots on the playlist, but Young doesn't stop there. Curveballs, like a funked-up take on Burt Bacharach's "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" and an odd pass at The Police's "Roxanne," which eventually falls into organ chaos due to Brian Charette's madcap machinations, keep everybody on their toes. The inclusion of a saxophone and drum duo take on a tune by Irving Berlin furthers the notion that Jordan Young keeps his iPod and mind on random shuffle.

While eight of the ten tracks presented herein belong to others, Young does manage to throw two of his originals into the mix and both prove to be winners. The comfortable pace and melodious nature of "Bird Bath" contribute to its charm, while "Mood For McCann" has a hip, boogaloo vibe that owes a debt to Morgan's "Sidewinder," the slickly appealing work of saxophonist Eddie Harris and the music he made with the presumed namesake of the piece, key tickler Les McCann.

The title of this record, which appears to be a shameful pun on "simple melodies," rings true in the end. Young delivers another behind-the-kit date that's all about the music rather than the leader's muscles; a clear sign of musical maturity and selflessness, if ever there was one.

https://www.posi-tone.com/cymbalmelodies/cymbalmelodies.html

Brian Charette - Will Bernard - Rudy Royston • Alphabet City

Brian Charette takes to the streets and brings it all back home with his latest release (2015) "Alphabet City."  While the compositional focus and musical crux of "Alphabet City" rests squarely upon the shoulders of Charette and his Hammond B-3 organ, the additional contributions of guitarist Will Bernard and drummer Rudy Royston also provide melodic highlights and the necessary rhythmic support to keep the session deeply in the pocket. With an exciting program featuring a wide range of styles, from the funky and soulful to the edgy and original, "Alphabet City" certainly exceeds expectations as a hard swinging collection of straight ahead performances that jazz enthusiasts will surely enjoy from A to Z.

Ronnie Cuber • Four

Recording as a valued leader and sideman in numerous contexts for more than 40 years, baritone saxophonist Ronnie Cuber continues to plow through different, sometimes contrasting, terrains. He convened a challenging saxophone/bass/drums ensemble for Ronnie’s Trio in 2018, and on Four, Cuber delivers an archetypal soul-jazz groove, adding his bari to an organ trio. It’s a classic sound in jazz, but atypical in his own discography. The warm and fluid tone that Cuber brings to this session makes one wonder why it’s taken him so long to front such a troupe. His command of the dynamic comes across in especially vivid colors on ballads like “Tenderly,” as B-3 player Brian Charette dashes Toots Thielemans’ “Bluesette” with funk. Drummer Adam Nussbaum has been a regular sideman in Cuber’s groups, and this familiarity makes for an ongoing and fulfilling dialogue. The drummer’s shifting tones on “Coming Home Baby” might have made Cuber rethink his direction on the fly, although he easily floats over the changes. While Cuber’s approach here is resolutely modern, much of album serves the same function as the organ-jazz idiom did 50 years ago: to rock a club with the same kind of backbone as a much larger band.
